Ruben Amorim has made his position clear on when Manchester United are likely to challenge for the Premier League trophy again under his reign at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have failed to lift the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season — the 2012-13 campaign — in charge at Old Trafford.
Sir Alex Ferguson engineered all 13 of United’s Premier League titles during his legendary 26-year reign at Old Trafford as Red Devils manager.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho led the Red Devils to second place in the Premier League table, which is the highest finish since Ferguson’s retirement.
Ruben Amorim became the sixth permanent manager at United in the post-Ferguson era after he arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting CP in 2024.
The 40-year-old United manager succeeded former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag in the Red Devils hot seat after his predecessor was sacked last October.
The Red Devils triggered the £9.25m release clause in Amorim’s Sporting CP contract and the Portuguese faces an uphill task at Old Trafford.

Amorim on about Premier League title challenge
Manchester United languish in 13th place in the Premier League table after a lacklustre 2024-25 season, with the Red Devils only managing eight league wins.
Ruben Amorim’s men are 12 points clear of the relegation zone ahead of their trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for their Premier League clash on Sunday.
However, the Red Devils are 14 points adrift from the Premier League top four and are likely to miss out on a Champions League qualification spot for next season.
According to The Athletic last September, United chief executive officer Omar Berrada told staff about the club’s ambition to win the Premier League title in 2028.
Speaking ahead of the Spurs match, Amorim has backed the idea of United lifting the title in 2028, which would mark the 150th anniversary of the club being formed.
“Yes, we talk about that, our focus is to win the Premier League and we can change everything in a few years,” he said at his pre-match press conference on Friday, as per the Manchester Evening News.
“In this moment, we are in a difficult position, but we need to work every day and focus on the little steps.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe on Man Utd ambition
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made it clear that his bid is to restore United’s prestige after he became co-owner of the Premier League club in 2023.
The 72-year-old British billionaire even said in 2024 that he wanted the Red Devils to “knock” both Manchester City and Liverpool “off their perch.”
Ineos, which took control of football operations at Old Trafford, is expected to back Amorim with new signings in the summer window as part of a squad overhaul.
Amorim has stuck with his convictions and continued to play his tactical system, despite United’s hit-and-miss results and form during his reign.
