Sporting Club de Portugal manager Rui Borges has admitted succeeding Ruben Amorim at the club after his move to Manchester United is the biggest challenge of his life.
[Zero Zero cover comments](https://www.zerozero.pt/noticias/rui-borges-e-comparacao-com-amorim-se-calhar-ele-tambem-precisa-de-tempo-em-manchester-/746056) from the Sporting boss today from his pre-match press conference, in which he was asked questions about succeeding Amorim.
Amorim left the Portuguese club at the beginning of November after Manchester United moved to hire him as their replacement for Erik ten Hag.
He was initially succeeded by João Pereira, but he only remained in the role for just over a month before replaced on Boxing Day.
Rui Borges was instead hired from Vitória Guimarães. He’s so far managed 14 games in all competitions but has something of a mixed record to date, with five wins, three draws and six defeats to date.
It’s been a similar story for Amorim, who has not quite managed to have the transformative effect many were hoping for at Manchester United. His record is currently ten wins, two draws and eight defeats in 20 games in all competitions.
That’s seemingly led to questions being put to Borges about any comparisons, something it seems he was happy to engage with.
“It has been very challenging because I joined a club that, at that time, was not very harmonious,” he said.
“There were a lot of injuries, a coach had just left who had left a mark on the club… it’s normal to make comparisons. I really admire Ruben, but I’m Rui Borges, I said that on the first day. It’s the biggest challenge of my life.”
“Maybe as he needs now at Manchester United,” he added when asked if he needs time to build a ‘super team’.
“Sporting is the best and is in first place. It wasn’t when I arrived. I promise to work, to fight to be a champion. I want to win every game we play. Super team? It depends on the point of view. It’s up to me to reach the end and be champion, as the members want and as I do too.”
