Rasmus Hojlund warned life could get more difficult at Manchester United, goal drought proving costly

Rasmus Hojlund has struggled to score goals for Manchester United this season.

After a 2023 transfer to Manchester United from Atalanta, Rasmus Hojlund was immediately tasked with being the main man up front, expected to provide goals in a team that creates few chances.

That is a huge responsibility and the 22-year-old has continued to struggle in his second season at the club, with only Joshua Zirkzee to provide competition for the striker role.

Ruben Amorim has been supportive of Hojlund and suggests his teammates are not doing enough to create goalscoring opportunities for the Denmark international.

While that may be true, it’s also down to Hojlund to make the right moves on the pitch for his teammates to pick him out in advanced positions.

It doesn’t bode well for Hojlund that United are being linked with strikers ahead of the summer transfer window. Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres has been targeted by United for some time, with speculation intensifying since Amorim’s arrival.

Jan Molby sends warning to Rasmus Hojlund

With United potentially in the market for a goalscorer, Hojlund could be pushed down the pecking order next season.

The same would apply to Zirkzee if United chose to bring in another striker because the Netherlands international tends to be overlooked in the starting line-up.

MORE UNITED STORIES

United need more strikers moving forward but gone are the days when Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad would consist of four equally good forwards.

Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby spoke to Tipsbladet about Hojlund’s form and sent a warning to the striker about potentially losing his place in the team if a top striker comes in.

“Rasmus Hojlund is a little harder to understand,” Molby said. “It is clear that he is not scoring enough goals. No one doubts that.

“The question is how they want to build this new Manchester United team, and also when they actually have the money to go out and buy a top striker.

“They don’t have that yet, but they have a lot of exciting young player, and Hojlund is one of them. It will be exciting, but I have no doubt that Hojlund will stay at Manchester United after the summer, but of course he also has to deliver.”

Rasmus Hojlund yet to score in 2025

Without a goal since the turn of the year, Hojlund is on a 14-game goal drought heading into this weekend’s clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Dane has scored just two Premier League goals this season, which has raised question marks about whether he is prolific enough in front of goal to lead the line for United.

Hojlund’s stats this season are a concern because United need to find a goalscorer who can help the team compete for the biggest honours.

That said, it’s important to note that Hojlund is still young and isn’t the only player in United’s first team to underperform this season.

Hojlund still has plenty of time to develop as a player and it may help if he had an experienced striker to learn under, even though Ruud van Nistelrooy was unable to get the best out of him during his short stint as caretaker manager.

Now, it’s Ruben Amorim’s job to get the best out of Hojlund because there wouldn’t be so much talk about new strikers if he was finding the back of the net.
