Man United must sell to buy new players in summer, says Amorim

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has said that he will need to sell players in order to bring in new faces at Old Trafford in the summer amid tight profit and sustainability margins.

United had a quiet window having only signed Patrick Dorgu, who arrived from Serie A club Lecce with one day of the January transfer window remaining for a fee of £25m.

The club have made their own efforts to cut costs away from the pitch, with frequent redundancies being made and another one imminent, according to BBC Sport.

Amorim’s point of view remains with the performance of his team, of course, and says their biggest problem at the moment is their opponents on Sunday.

“I have to understand all these problems but that problem of our club is not new. We already knew all the rules of [financial] fair play, we have a problem at the moment, but that cannot change the way I coach the team and prepare the team.

“Our biggest problem now is Tottenham and we know the moment of the club.”

"My focus is to prepare [for] the game. The window is closed. We need to focus on the games we have, especially the next one and then in the summer we shall see."

On the importance of the summer window and having to sell to buy: "You know the rules better than me.

"Our focus now is to win these games and then we have time to focus on that. I'm really, really focused on winning the next game."

Amorim: It is impossible to be comfortable

Although United have won their last five games in seven, there is a constant state of dejection among the club based on current circumstances; they sit 13th in the Premier League before the visit to north London.

Amorim understands his state of affairs, saying “there is no comfort in any situation in this club.”

He added: “It is impossible. If you see the table it is impossible to feel any type of comfort at this moment.

"We just want to win, to improve our performance because we are Manchester United. We are always talking about the same thing, we need to win the next game, we need to improve, we need to perform better.”

Tottenham, like United, are in the bottom half of the table. Additionally, they are at risk of losing three games in a row in all competitions for the first time since May 2024.

In fact, Amorim spoke of the similarities between the two but said the main difference between both clubs is that the Portuguese head coach is at a “bigger club, with bigger pressure.”

He added: “I am a huge fan of Ange Postecoglou. I am from a different culture, Portuguese and all the Portuguese coaches they can adapt to. I adapt.

“I use one system because I believe if you do that system, you can use other systems at the same time. That is my idea.

"But, we are not winning games and I understand the connection between me and Ange, we have the same problems. In my opinion, with all due respect, I am at a bigger club, with bigger pressure. It is important for a coach to follow his principles."

Postecoglou has arguably been under-fire much longer than Amorim given the duration in which both parties have been at their respective clubs, and the United boss has sympathised with the 59-year-old.

“Of course, especially because he is a good guy, a good coach, he wants to play football the right way.

"When we choose this profession there are a lot of good things but then you feel that pressure when you don’t win."
