Chido Obi celebrates scoring for Manchester United's U18s in the FA Youth Cup
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has warned Chido Obi and his academy teammates not to relent with their work ethic if they want to make it at Old Trafford.
Obi has become one of the shining lights in the United academy after being poached from Arsenal last year. Since being integrated into the U18s in Leigh, the Danish youth international has shown exactly why United wanted to sign him.
In 12 appearances, he has scored 12 goals and this form has led the 17-year-old to be invited to first-team training so Amorim can cast an eye over him. On Wednesday night, the forward was in electric form as he bagged a hat-trick in a 5-1 thrashing of Chelsea in the prestigious FA Youth Cup.
Unsurprisingly, this performance has only strengthened calls for Obi to be introduced into the first team fold particularly with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggling for goals. Speaking ahead of this weekend's clash with Tottenham Hotspur, Amorim insisted that the U18s players must continue their hard work if they are going to break into the first-team in the future.
"Of course, they have [done well] and we need them a lot for the future of this club and I am really happy for them," he told United's official website.
"But they need to keep working because the Premier League is a different world, and they have to improve every day. So I am really happy and they need to continue."
One player who enjoyed a quick transition from the youth set-up to the first-team was Alejandro Garnacho and Amorim added that he has been impressed by the winger following his Man of the Match display last time out against Leicester City.
"Yes, he is enjoying the way we play," the head coach concluded. "He is confident and he is good in the moments one v one. These kind of details, in a player like him, is important."
