Arsenal make contact over move for Serie A striker

Arsenal will hope to keep alive their Premier League title chances when they face Leicester City on Saturday afternoon.

Mikel Arteta’s side currently sit second in the table, seven points behind leaders Liverpool who were held to a 2-2 draw by Merseyside rivals Everton in midweek.

The Gunners have finished second in each of the last two Premier League seasons, but Arteta will be aware that his side likely cannot afford any more slip ups if they are to have any chance of catching the Reds.

The Spaniard faces something of a selection headache on Saturday with Kai Havertz becoming the latest Arsenal forward to be sidelined through injury.

Havertz is set to miss the remainder of the campaign and, with that in mind, it appears that the North London side are on the hunt for attacking reinforcements.

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal have made contact over a move for Atalanta forward Mateo Retegui.

25-year-old Retegui has been in sensational form this season, scoring 23 goals and providing a further four assists in 34 matches across all competitions.

The Italy international’s impressive form has also attracted interest from Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Manchester United, the report claims.

It is claimed that Arsenal have made contact with Atalanta about the possibility of a move for the striker, while those steering United’s recruitment have added the player to a list of transfer targets as they search for attacking reinforcements.

Retegui joined Atalanta from fellow Italian side Genoa last summer and has since established himself as one of the most prolific strikers in Serie A.

He currently sits top of the goal scoring charts for this season in the Italian top flight, having netted 20 times in 22 matches in the competition at a rate of a goal every 66 minutes.

The Italian’s current contract with Atalanta is set to run until 2028, though, which puts the club in a commanding position during any potential negotiations.
