Retiring from playing football is not an easy decision, but it’s one every professional footballer will face at some point in their life.
There is no denying that Manchester United is a special club. It’s usually the case that most players maintain a connection with Old Trafford after coming through the academy system or playing for the first team.
A lot of players who’ve left United down the years still reflect fondly on their time at the club as well as their connection with the fans.
Some former players – such as Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Rio Ferdinand – can’t go a week without mentioning United-related stories on their podcasts.

James Chester retires as Manchester United’s 189th academy graduate
Following a career that saw James Chester represent 11 clubs as well as the Wales national team, the centre-back retires after coming through Manchester United’s academy system.
Chester made his United debut in 2009 as a substitute when he replaced Gary Neville against Derby County in the League Cup. That’s when the defender became United’s 189th academy graduate to play for the first team.
He would spend a further two years at Old Trafford before leaving in 2011 to join Hull City.
The 36-year-old had other spells with Aston Villa, West Brom, Stoke City and Derby before dropping down to League Two with Barrow and Salford City.
