Ruben Amorim may now regret shipping Marcus Rashford and Antony out on loan in January after Amad suffered a serious ankle injury that could rule him out for the rest of the season.

Rashford joined fellow Premier League side Aston Villa, while Antony has made an impressive start to life at Real Betis. Both players fell out of favour under Amorim, but the Portuguese now finds himself short of attacking options after it emerged Amad had picked up an injury in training.

According to the Daily Mail, Amad is facing a 'lengthy lay-off' and he may not play for United again this season. The 22-year-old has been a key player under Amorim and is the only United star to have featured in every game of his tenure so far.

Amad has impressed in Amorim's 3-4-3 system, scoring six goals and providing five assists in 20 appearances across all competitions, and his form earned him a bumper new long-term contract last month.

The injury leaves United without many wide options following Rashford and Antony's exits, particularly with Mason Mount also sidelined through injury. Lisandro Martinez has already been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, while Luke Shaw and Jonny Evans remain long-term absentees.

Midfielders Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer have also picked up injuries in training this week, with youngster Jack Moorhouse set to be included in the United squad for the first time when they take on Tottenham on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of their trip to Spurs, Amorim said: "It was a good week until two days ago. We had some problems also. We don't have players back. Maybe we have one or two issues, we are waiting.

"We have one player also who is sick so we will see who is fit. But it was good to work with team, to feel the players and try and improve performances." When asked about the academy prospects who have been training with the first team as a result, he added: "I don't want to say names.

"We have to be careful on that. We have problems this week, we called some young players to be in our training. We have some data evaluation. He [Chido Obi-Martin] is one of them."
