Teddy Sheringham says Ruben Amorim has a massive problem to solve with Manchester United's lack of goals.
United face Tottenham this afternoon having scored 28 times in 24 Premier League games so far this season, netting just twice in their last three domestic league matches. Only four sides – Everton, Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton – have scored fewer goals than United in the top flight so far this term.
And unless Amorim can get his side playing a different way, 1999 Treble winner Sheringham, who played for both United and Spurs, does not see that changing anytime soon. United’s main striker, Rasmus Hojlund has scored just seven times in 31 games so far this season in all competitions – and five of those have come in the Europa League.
Sheringham said: “I’ve spoken about Hojlund before. I quite like Hojlund. I think he’s had to feed off scraps for the last two years. Manchester United don’t really play wingers that get the balls into the box and feed the centre forwards.

“All the wingers do is cut in, and right at the last minute, if they can’t shoot, they poke it to Hojlund and it’s like, 'Right, you do something with it.' He doesn’t really thrive off of midfielders poking little passes through either.
“Centre forwards thrive on service and if you ain’t getting the service you can’t score the goals.
“If you’re not scoring the goals your confidence dries up. When your confidence dries up, your performance doesn’t get any better. Give the boy some service and he’ll score goals, is the way I see it.”

Meanwhile, Sheringham says Tottenham’s depleted squad will have to battle once again as Ange Postecoglou attempts to put defeats to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup and Aston Villa in the FA Cup behind them.
Spurs have used 29 different players in the top flight this term as they have seen player after player go down with injury. Australian Postecoglou has been under mounting pressure in recent months but said after defeat to Villa that criticism which doesn’t include mention of Spurs’ lengthy injury list is “agenda-driven”.
And Sheringham is sure Tottenham’s players are in for another hard afternoon’s work.
Speaking to finaria.it, Sheringham said: “I’m expecting a tired Tottenham team. I listened to Ange talking again the other night, they’ve been playing Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday and it’s a grind.
“You’re travelling, you get yourself up for one game then it’s not such a big league game, you’ve got to pick the players up again and motivate them confidence-wise.
“It’s a topsy-turvy season that these young lads are going through. It will hold the club in good stead for these young players, but it’s all about the here and now.
“You need to start grinding out some results now because it doesn’t look good on paper.”
