Ruben Amorim names Man Utd's'biggest problem'in response to Sir Jim Ratcliffe's job cuts

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is making more cuts at Manchester United

Ruben Amorim says he and Manchester United's players owe it to staff at risk of the sack to lift morale at the crisis-hit club.

Ruthless United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to make up to 200 more staff redundant, on the back of the 250 job cuts he oversaw at the club last autumn. Morale among United staff is at rock-bottom on the back of Ratcliffe's brutal cuts, which are aimed at addressing losses totalling £300million over the last three years.

United boss Amorim said the savage cuts have affected him and his players and claimed they owe it to those who are under threat to deliver performances and results on the pitch.

“I think it’s really important for us in the first-team, coaches and players, to not ignore that,” said Amorim. "People are losing their jobs, so we have to acknowledge that and the biggest problem is the football, because we spent the money and we're not winning. We're not in the Champions League, so the revenues are not the same.

“We spent a lot of money in the past and now we have to be careful with the finances. We can't rebuild the team the way we would like. When people are losing their jobs, of course it’s hard to have that feeling of people feeling safe in their jobs and it affects the environment.

“We cannot ignore that, we acknowledge that problem and I want to say that the responsibility is on the first-team and we have to change that.”

As well as the loss of staff, United fans have been hit by a huge hike in ticket prices, with the cheapest ticket now costing £66, after Ratcliffe abolished concessions for pensioners and children.

On Sunday, United, currently languishing in 13th place in the Premier League, go to Tottenham – one place below them – in a game Amorim admitted his side must win – to boost morale.

“The first part, what we should do, is to win at Tottenham,” said Amorim. That is a small step to try to help these people, to try not to push the prices of the tickets higher. We are responsible for that.”
