Chelsea transfer target given'next Lionel Messi'tag after Enzo Fernandez praise

Franco Mastantuono is being hailed as the potential new Lionel Messi, with Chelsea reportedly on the hunt for his signature.

The River Plate midfield star has showcased his talent in Argentina, tallying four goals in 42 appearances in an advanced role.

Labelled as one of Argentina's most exciting prospects, Premier League giants like Chelsea and Manchester United are reportedly organising deals to snap up the young prodigy.

Mastantuono's abilities have garnered acclaim from football greats including Blues vice captain Enzo Fernandez and River Plate icon Matias Almeyda.

The teenage sensation has caught the eye of the World Cup champion, who believes the River Plate prodigy is primed for a European adventure. Speaking to ESPN F12 about the young talent, the 24-year-old said: "He's showing that he has a European future."

"You can see it. He's an incredible player. He's doing very well and has shown great talent. In my opinion, he's a star. I wish him the best and hope he can achieve all his goals. Hopefully he can also help us in the national team."

And despite many dubbing Lamine Yamal as Messi's heir, AEK Athens boss Almeyda views Mastantuono as worthy of carrying the torch. During an interview with DSports Radio, the former footballer said: "Another Maradona or another Messi will unlikely emerge, but another player will come.

"After Maradona, people said that there would never be another like him, and then Messi appeared, and I think that after Messi, another one will appear, and his name is Franco Mastantuono."

Almeyda didn't stop at Mastantuono, however, as he claimed that Argentina's future is bright with emerging talent, adding: "There are many kids who won't be equal to those two, but they will be at another level. We're a breeding ground for very good players."

River Plate's own boss Marcelo Gallardo has been singing the praises of the midfield maestro as well, although he's mindful of managing expectations due to Mastantuono's youth.

Gallardo said: "What we have to do is support him; he's a kid who has his feet on the ground, but it's not a bad idea to support him and make him feel like he has to keep growing."

Chelsea are reportedly keen on the teenager, but there are other European giants battling to sign him too. Sky Sports News understands that United are keen on the star, with Barcelona and Athletico Madrid also in the mix.

Despite the interest, Mastantuono might stay put this summer, especially since River Plate president Jorge Brito reported a hefty £46million profit last season, easing any financial pressure to sell.

Yet, the 17-year-old's release clause stands at a mere £38m - a record for the Argentine outfit but quite reasonable by Premier League standards of late.

Mastantuono's current deal expires at the end of next season - 2026 - which could potentially lure him to a future in one of Europe's elite leagues.
