Roy Keane has rubbished the notion that a guard of honour is outdated and believes Liverpool will be fully entitled to one at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds will travel to west London in their first outing since winning the Premier League at Anfield last weekend and, as a result, are set to receive a guard of honour from Enzo Maresca's side.

But ahead of this weekend's fixture, both Rio Ferdinand and Peter Crouch insisted the idea of being clapped onto the pitch was outdated and "embarrassing" for all parties.

However, former United captain Keane disagrees with those suggestions and believes it is a gesture that is deserved when a team wins the Premier League.

Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Sunday's game between Chelsea and Liverpool, Keane said: "Do you know what? In the game to get respect, you have to show respect.

"Now, a lot of people might not like it. Obviously it's nice when you get it, but you have to give it. It's part of the game.

"It would be different if it were real rivals, say Manchester City vs Manchester United or Everton vs Liverpool. But I think you have to do it, it's part of the game. Respect.

"To get respect, you have to show it. It works both ways."

On Thursday, Maresca confirmed Chelsea would stick to the tradition and offer Liverpool a guard of honour before kick-off on Sunday afternoon.

"Yes. It's tradition. We have to do that, and we are going to do that," said the Italian. "They won the Premier League, so they deserve it.”

After winning the Premier League title in 2020, Liverpool received a guard of honour from Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea.

And when Chelsea won the Premier League in the 2014/15 season, Liverpool welcomed the Londoners onto the pitch with a guard of honour before a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
