Liverpool suffered only their third Premier League defeat of the season when they were beaten at Chelsea. A much-changed Reds side fell behind early on and despite dominating possession for the most part had only a late Virgil van Dijk goal to show for their efforts as they eventually fell to a 3-1 reverse on Sunday afternoon.

The result makes no difference to Arne Slot's side, who have already been confirmed champions and retain a whopping 15-point advantage over nearest rivals Arsenal.

The ECHO was at Stamford Bridge and here we run the rule over Liverpool's players.

What stunned Arne Slot about Liverpool celebrations as subtle point signals new ambition

Alisson Becker 6

No chance with either Chelsea goal and otherwise had very little to do until late save from Jadon Sancho as Liverpool dominated possession.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 6

Tried to get the Reds going forward with some probing passes. Defended solidly enough. Subbed.

Jarell Quansah 6

Good pace to get back and block a Palmer break and aggressive defending when required. Unlucky to be in the way of Van Dijk clearance for second goal and later still to give away penalty with foul on Caicedo. Booked.

Virgil van Dijk 7

Used the ball well when passing out of defence and no real issues defensively before interval, but slightly panicked clearance gifted Chelsea second. Atoned with strong header to score late on. Booked.

Kostas Tsimikas 6

Opener came down his flank and a tough battle up against Pedro Neto but wasn’t embarrassed. Saw free-kick charged down. Subbed.

Wataru Endo 6

Asked to do a lot of the defensive work in midfield in the opening minutes but then given chance to use the ball more creatively. Subbed.

Curtis Jones 7

Started far too progressively but became more of an influence when dropping a bit deeper and took the fight to Chelsea in the second half. One good tackle on Cole Palmer.

Mohamed Salah 6

Didn’t get much out of Marc Cucurella before break and touch deserted him a couple of times. More encouragement second half and cross created good chance for Darwin Nunez.

Harvey Elliott 5

Very slack opening set the tone for a difficult appearance in which he struggled to find an impactful position. No lack of endeavour, though. Subbed.

Cody Gakpo 6

Liverpool’s liveliest attacker before the break when cutting in off the left and forced Robert Sanchez into save. Crossing started to cause Chelsea problems second half.

Diogo Jota 5

Given scant service and let down by poor control with the one opportunity that came his way. Not his day. Subbed.

Conor Bradley (for Alexander-Arnold 58) 6

Injected pace down the Liverpool right but beaten by Palmer for one Chelsea chance.

Darwin Nunez (for Jota 58) 5

Should have scored when sending header wide from good position.

Dominik Szoboszlai (for Elliott 69) 6

A few decent balls as Liverpool looked to work a way back into the game, but slack pass prompted penalty.

Alexis Mac Allister (for Endo 69) 6

Delivered the corner from which Van Dijk scored.

Federico Chiesa (for Tsimikas 82)

Found it hard to step into an intense match. Premier League winners’ medal, though.
