From Portugal: Arsenal make contact to sign 'exceptional' winger for Arteta, they're leading…

Arsenal could look to get a deal over the line for Sporting star Francisco Trincao in the coming months, according to reports from Portugal - with Mikel Arteta keen on bringing attacking talent into his squad to allow competition for Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.

The Gunners have failed to win a domestic cup competition for the fifth year running after Liverpool beat them to the Premier League title with four games to go, and although they still have a chance of winning the Champions League, Arteta could see recruitments come in over the summer to give him a bigger chance of turning that around.

With that in mind, the report by Portuguese outlet Record states that Trincao has interest from Arsenal, with the Gunners 'standing out' in a transfer race between other clubs - and Arteta's men have sent scouts to watch the former Barcelona star, heading to Sporting to take in his performances.

Trincao also faced Arsenal in the Champions League earlier in the season, with Arteta's side having made contact about his services - and the north London club would be prepared to offer him a salary of around £50,000-per-week after tax.

Sporting, meanwhile, are aiming to secure a renewal with the 'exceptional' Trincao and his representatives, with his current deal set to last for another two seasons - though the report states that the Premier League is a 'desire' for the ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee.

Trincao has shone for Portugal's national team, and he has since been moved onto the shortlist of top Premier League clubs as a result, with interest now materialising as a result of his strong performances in the Portuguese capital.

Trincao has 27 goals and assists in just 50 games for Sporting this season, including 23 of those being in the Primeira Liga - alongside an assist against Manchester City and Arsenal in the Champions League in the space of three weeks in November.

Though Trincao largely struggled at Wolves with just four goals and assists combined in 30 games, he's shone in his home nation and that has seen him called into the national team, with the 25-year-old garnering 10 caps and two goals for the national setup.
