Sky Sports host Kelly Cates was forced to apologise live on air after Cole Palmer used some colourful language during his post-match interview. Liverpool suffered defeat in their first game since being crowned Premier League champions as they were beaten 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Fernandez’s early goal fired Enzo Maresca’s side ahead before Jarell Quansah scored a bizarre own-goal nine minutes into the second-half. Virgil van Dijk would reduce the arrears, but Palmer’s stoppage time penalty secured all three points for his side.

Speaking after the game, Palmer was asked by Sky Sports about his goal and said: "I just felt normal. Obviously s*** happens, sorry for my language, it happens.

"I went three months without scoring, but it just gives me more fight and motivation to do more for myself and for the team.

"Social media nowadays is full of idiots, the trolls and whatever. I don't pay any attention to that. I've scored today, and I'm happy, but it's only one and I've got to keep improving and try and reach new levels."

After the interview concluded, Sky went back to the studio and Cates issued an apology for some of the language used by Palmer.

She said: "A player of the match performance from Cole Palmer there, we have to apologise again for the swearing."

Reflecting on the win, Palmer said: "They're champions for a reason but we showed good fight and desire.

"Getting chances and not scoring, it feels like you're letting your team down. I feel like I am mentally strong anyway. I feel pride in helping the team and if I'm not doing that, I'm not happy.

"Today I felt confident, I was trying things, first time passes, playing forward. When you have got him [Moises Caicedo] in front of you, it's a dream.

"From the start of the season, he has been our best player, he wins the ball back all the time, he's humble, nice to everyone and everyone loves him."

While Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo told Sky: "I think we did well the team showed character. We are happy that we won this game.

"Cole he's an amazing guy. Always train hard, so happy for him. He helps us a lot even when he didn't score. He's a great guy and he deserves everything."
