Cole Palmer makes Liverpool title statement after Chelsea win

Cole Palmer has gone through a difficult time.

It was 12 games in the Premier League without a goal heading into Chelsea's game with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. And it looked as if his barren run in front of goal would continue.

But in the 95th minute, a poor Dominik Szoboszlai pass into his own bow was pouned on by Moises Caicedo and he was felled in the area by Jarrell Quansah giving the referee no choice but to point to the penalty spot.

Palmer had already missed a spot-kick during his goal drought, against Leicester in March.

But this time he made no mistake, lifting the huge weight that had been on his shoulders and rounding off a 3-1 win for the home side.

Quite apart from the spot-kick, Palmer was excellent against the champions, picking up the man of the match award for his all-round play, with everything going through the former Manchester City man.

Speaking in a passionate interview after the game he said: "I went three months without scoring but it just gives me more fight and motivation to do more for myself and for the team.

"I've scored today and I'm happy but it's only one and I've got to keep improving and try and reach new levels."

But Palmer was also asked about beating new champions Liverpool and his 12-word statement showed his true colours, with his "desire" to go and do similar with Chelsea in the near future.

He added: "They’re champions for a reason but we showed good fight and desire."

The 3-1 win over Liverpool dramatically improves Chelsea's chances of finishing in the top five this season and clinching Champions League football for next season.

They moved level on points with Newcastle United in fourth and one point behind Manchester City in third. They are three points clear of Nottingham Forest in sixth, although Forest take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in their game in hand on Monday night.
