Flamengo hope to sign Arsenal player in June

Flamengo remain hopeful of signing Arsenal midfielder Jorginho in time for the Club World Cup, according to a report, with discussions ongoing.

Lyall Thomas reports for Sky Sports News that Flamengo remain in discussions with Jorginho’s representatives about a free transfer this summer, with sporting director Jose Boto confirming they’re hoping to bring him in before the Club World Cup.

“If Jorginho comes, it will be after the end of the season in Europe, I hope in time for the Club World Cup,” Boto said.

That would require Arsenal to agree to end his contract early, with Jorginho’s current deal expiring on June 30th. The Club World Cup kicks off for Flamengo on June 17th.

There’s an additional transfer window specifically to help teams involved in the Club World Cup, with the window opening on June 1st until June 10th.

But if Jorginho wants to make a transfer during that window, he needs Arsenal to release him early, he can’t simply make a free transfer without the club’s consent.

Reports from Brazil have been more optimistic, claiming Jorginho will be a Flamengo player and that he has an agreement with Arsenal to terminate his contract after their 2024/25 campaign ends. But those claims are yet to be confirmed in any English publications.

Jorginho is currently working on his return from injury, with BBC sources claiming he’s suffered a punctured lung. Rumours on social media suggest he’s expected to return this season, but likely only in time for Arsenal’s final Premier League game against Southampton.
