Stefan Borson: Man City to receive 'confidential' Arsenal documents after legal twist

Manchester City have stepped up their associated party transactions (APT) case against the Premier League after requesting new documents.

The Manchester giants succeeded in getting the APT rules changed after taking legal action last June, but they remain unhappy with the regulations.

Man City launched a new accusation at the Premier League last month after claiming the rules favoured Arsenal, Everton and Leicester City, who have benefitted greatly from loans from their owners.

The Times reported on 29 April those clubs could now be forced to disclose detailed information about their shareholder loans.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider he believes the club will receive the confidential documents they are requesting.

Man City could have to wait until the beginning of 2026 before the panel publishes its verdict in their second APT case, with the trial set to take place in mid-October.

Arsenal documents ‘critical’ to Man City case

Borson revealed the documents will be critically relevant to Man City’s case.

He told Football Insider: “They have got a case that those documents appear to be relevant.

“Have they got a case in terms of getting the disclosure of them? That will be a separate process. City are saying that they need to be disclosed under the Premier League rules, under rule B.18 I think it is.

“I’m not sure that is the right rule that will see them get these documents because, just from reading the rules, that seems to me to be a rule that allows the Premier League to ask for these documents as part of their processes but wouldn’t necessarily allow a party at arbitration to also get hold of those documents.

“And furthermore, even if the Premier League use those rules to get the documents, it’s not clear to me how the Premier League then has to hand those over to City because they appear to be confidential documents relating to certain clubs.

“That said, I do think that ultimately City will get hold of those documents to the extent that they’re relevant in the case. Now, it may be that they’re redacted in certain ways.

“That seems perfectly feasible, or that they’re summarised in terms of the key details that City are seeking, but it does seem like those documents will be critically relevant for the case.

“Therefore, you would expect one way or another City to get hold of those documents and for them to be in play within the arbitration.”

It is believed McAtee, who has registered seven goals in 26 appearances this season, wants to kickstart his career and may have to agree a move elsewhere to make that happen.

The midfielder’s contract is set to expire in June 2026 and Man City are keen to tie him down to a new deal to protect his value.
