WSL Golden Boot: Who will take the award on the final match day?

On Sunday, May 10th, teams face off for the last time in this Women’s Super League season. Chelsea have already secured the title, while Crystal Palace will be relegated to the Women’s Championship, with the London City Lionesses taking their place in the top tier. But that doesn’t mean there is nothing left to play for on the final match day. An interesting game will be between Arsenal and Manchester United, as they battle for second place and a later entry into the Women’s Champions League. And there is the Golden Boot. Find out who is still in contention to become the Women’s Super League Top Scorer 2024/2025.

Shaw and Russo lead the race

Khadija Shaw and Alessia Russo currently lead the WSL scoring chart, each with 12 goals. Shaw remains sidelined with an injury going into the final match day, struggling with fitness throughout the season and featuring in only 14 games. Bunny Shaw won the Golden Boot last season after scoring 21 goals in 18 games.

Russo, however, has a final opportunity to add to her tally in the match against Manchester United this weekend. The last time these teams went head-to-head, the game ended in a 1-1 draw, with Russo scoring Arsenal’s goal. The Arsenal forward scored her most recent goal in a 5-2 loss to Aston Villa. If Russo fails to find the back of the net this weekend, she and Shaw will share the WSL Golden Boot – assuming no other players overtake them.

Martinez: The surprise contender

Shekiera Martinez is the closest contender with ten goals. The West Ham United player scored four in their 7-1 over Crystal Palace and found the net again against Aston Villa last weekend. Martinez has only arrived at The Hammers in the summer of 2024 and spent the first half of the season on loan at SC Freiburg, making her position in the WSL Golden Boot race impressive. West Ham United faces Leicester City away on Sunday.

Following closely behind are Elisabeth Terland (9), Grace Clinton (8), Mariona Caldentey (8), Aggie Beever-Jones (8), Guro Reiten (8) and Bethany England (8).
