Leroy Sane
Leroy Sane of Bayern Munich playing for Germany
Premier League sides Chelsea and Arsenal have been previously linked with a move for Leroy Sane but according to a report in SPORT1, the London clubs are now having second thoughts.
Leroy Sane is out of contract at the end of this season and the winger is yet to sign a new deal. Rumours are rife that the 29-year-old is looking to leave Bayern and return to England during the summer window. Initially, a move for the two-time EPL champion looked like a lucrative deal for both Arsenal and Chelsea but it seems like they are having second thoughts.
Why hasn’t Leroy Sane signed an extension?
Leroy Sane was very close to agreeing to a new three-year deal with Bayern but then matters got complicated because he changed his agent to Pini Zahavi.
He currently earns around €20 million per year(all inclusive) and Bayern are offering him a new package of about €15 million. However, the winger has made it clear that he is not ready to take a pay cut and at the same time, the Bavarians are not willing to accept his demands.
Kompany still considers him an integral part of his squad but Bayern won’t cave into his demands.
Why aren’t Chelsea and Arsenal keen to sign him?
Previously, Leroy Sane has spoken very highly of Mikel Arteta from his time at Manchester City but as per reports, the Arsenal manager is not confident of signing him right now.
Chelsea, on the other hand, are focusing on bringing in young players and a 29-year-old Leroy Sane does not fit their plans for the summer.
Should Arsenal and Chelsea take a gamble with Leroy Sane?
Arsenal have Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard in their squad and even though Mikel Arteta is looking to sign a new left winger, the manager does not need to risk things by going after Leroy Sane. Yes, Arsenal need experience in their team but because Arteta has seen him closely at Man City, the manager believes Sane will not fit into his long-term plans.
Chelsea, however, do need a new left-winger because Jadon Sancho has been a flop while Mudryk’s future is uncertain. Christopher Nkunku can play on the left-hand side but he is not happy at the club and will look to leave at the end of this season. Sancho will most likely also go back to Manchester United and in such a scenario, someone like Leroy Sane could be a very sensible signing.
His high wage demands will need to be met because the winger will arrive as a free agent but even if Chelsea were to get two or three great seasons out of him, Leroy Sane will be a success story at Stamford Bridge.
In conclusion, Arsenal do not need to inflate their wages and gamble on Leroy Sane but the way Chelsea have spent crazily under their new owner, they might as well go for the German international.
