Arsenal set for £21m windfall but only on one Champions League condition

Arsenal face the biggest match of their season on Wednesday night and one of the biggest games in their recent past as they take on Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final.

A place in the final of the competition is up for grabs and a meeting with Inter Milan, after the Italian's secured a dramatic 4-3 (7-6 on aggregate) extra-time win over Barcelona in the San Siro on Tuesday night.

Arsenal have to overturn a one-goal deficit to reach the final, given to PSG by Ousmane Dembele in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium last week.

But the Gunners are going into the clash having picked up a 2-1 win away at the Santiago Bernabeu in the last round, knocking out the holders in fine style.

It is not just the presitge that comes with reaching only a second ever Champions League final, but there is a huge financial reward available to the Gunners too.

Arsenal have already banked an impressive £51.34million from their Champions League run so far, and that figure can be inflated even more with progression to the final.

Just for making the group stage of the competition, teams are awarded €18.62 million (£15.6million), while every win in the group stage is worth €2.1 million (£1.7million), with each position in the table worth another €275,000 (£230,000).

The top eight teams in the league also earned a €2million (£1.6million) bonus.

Therefore, thanks to six wins and a third place finish, the Gunners earned £38.64million from the group stage alone.

Progression through the knockout stages bagged them an extra £12.7million and they will earn even more if they reach the final. Teams getting to the final receive €18.5million (£15.7million), with another €6.5million (£5.5million) going to the eventual winners of the tournament.

That means, should Arsenal beat PSG they will pick up a cool £15.7million, while if they then beat Inter in the final, they would scoop another £5.5million.

The Gunners are expected to be busy in the summer transfer window and that windfall would certainly help Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta to get their top targets.
