Extra-time and penalty shootout guidelines for PSG vs Arsenal second leg

Arsenal face a season-defining fixture at Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night as they look to overturn a 1-0 deficit in their Champions League semi-final tie.

Mikel Arteta's team got off to the worst-possible start in the first leg with an early Ousmane Dembele goal putting them on the back foot. Arsenal never recovered at the Emirates Stadium last week and will have it all to do in Paris on Wednesday night (8pm).

But the Gunners can still progress to the final in Munich on May 31 if they secure victory against PSG by at least two clear goals across the 90 minutes. That tie would go to 30 minutes of extra-time if Arsenal win 1-0 in normal time. If the scores remain level on aggregate after extra time, it will go to penalties.

The Gunners are seeking to reach a first final in Europe's elite competition since 2006, when they lost to Catalan giants Barcelona in Paris.

Arsenal know that Wednesday night's game is their final chance of salvaging a challenging campaign by their own recent recent standards. While a top-five finish in the Premier League is almost certain, Arteta's men have been some way off champions Liverpool - and they are in a battle to finish second in the table with Manchester City now hot on their heels.

But reaching the Champions League final by seeing off an impressive PSG team will silence Arteta's critics.

When asked, in his pre-match press conference, if Arsenal feel under pressure to end their five-year silverware drought, the Spaniard said: "We're going to try to do it this season. Winning trophies is about being in the right moment in the right place.

"Liverpool have won the title with less points than we have in the last two seasons, but at the point of the last two seasons we [don't] have two Premier Leagues, so you have to be in the right moment in the right place.

"Hopefully, here, we are in the right moment in the right place in Paris, to earn the right to be in that final."
