Away goals rule explained for PSG vs Arsenal second leg

Arsenal know they have work to do tonight when they travel to PSG in the semi-final of the Champions League.

The Gunners underwhelmed in the first leg of their last-four meeting, losing 1-0 after Ousmane Dembele's strike in the early stages of the game. In truth, Arsenal were lucky not to be further behind heading into the reverse fixture.

Bradley Barcola and Goncalo Ramos both missed great chances to extend the Parisians' advantage but, instead, Luis Enrique's men were forced to settle for one goal. Fortunately, this means that Arsenal still have a chance to progress to the final knowing a solitary goal in Paris will level the score-line on aggregate.

Any Arsenal fans hoping to take advantage of the away goals rule will be disappointed, though. football.london has taken a look at what the current UEFA regulations are;

Do away goals count in the Champions League?

Perhaps unfortunately for Arsenal, the away goals rule will not be in affect for the Champions League semi-final. In 2021, UEFA scrapped the regulation for away goals after it was deemed that the rule persuaded home teams not to attack in the first leg in fear of conceding.

The previous regulation would have meant that should Arsenal win 2-1 at the Parc des Princes tonight, then they would advance to the final of the Champions League due to scoring more away goals, despite that tie being level on aggregate.

What happens if the tie is now level on aggregate?

Should the semi-final tie be level on aggregate after the end of the second leg, it will go to extra-time and - if needed - penalties.

Who will the winner face in the final?

Either Arsenal or PSG will take on Inter Milan in the final of the Champions League. The Italians progressed to their second final in three seasons with a 7-6 aggregate victory over Catalan giants Barcelona.

Davide Frattesi scored the winning goal for Inter in the 99th minute to seal a 4-3 victory on the night against Hansi Flick's team. The final of the Champions League will be played in Munich's Allianz Arena on Saturday, May 31 at 8pm UK time.
