Rio Ferdinand supported after issuing health update as PSG vs Arsenal absence explained

Rio Ferdinand has confirmed he will not feature on TNT Sports for Arsenal's trip to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night after he was admitted to hospital.

The former Manchester United defender, 46, has been a firm fixture on TNT's Champions League coverage this season and was set to line up as part of the commentary team for Wednesday's semi-final second leg at the Parc des Princes. However, Ferdinand will not be present in Paris.

This is because Ferdinand is in hospital. He issued an update on his Instagram account a matter of hours before kick-off in France.

Ferdinand said: "Gutted to be missing the Semi-Finals this week on @tntsportsfootball! Wishing the team all the best — I'll be watching every minute from the iPad!" alongside a handshake emoji and a love heart emoji.

In response, the Football on TNT Sports social media account wrote: "Get well soon, Rio."

TNT Sports presenter Becky Ives added: "We miss you!!! Get well soon!" alongside a white love heart emoji.

Pop singer Olly Murs said: "Won’t be the same without ya Rio! Rest up," alongside a flexed bicep emoiji.

Jeff Brazier commented: "Get well soon," while Abbey Clancy, the wife of ex-Tottenham and Liverpool ace Peter Crouch, continued: "Hope your ok," alongside a love heart emoji.

A number of others wished Ferdinand well following his admission to hospital and it's unclear when the United legend is set to return to work and be back for TNT.

As for Arsenal, it's a massive night for Arteta and his team. They head to PSG looking to overturn the 1-0 deficit from the first leg and progress through to the Champions League final later this month.

Ousmane Dembele scored the winner for Luis Enrique's side, who are the favourites to book their place in the final and face Inter Milan, who beat Barcelona in a thrilling semi-final on Tuesday, in Munich.

However, Arteta's side have not given up hope. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Arsenal head coach offered some optimism going into the second leg on Wednesday night.

Arteta said: "[We have] huge enthusiasm, huge energy. We are a win away from being the Champions League final, in one of the most beautiful cities in the world against a great opponent - it doesn't get much better than that.

"We are here to make history, and we have a big opportunity tomorrow. We bring a result that gives us so much clarity about what we have to do.

"One win away from being in the final. We cannot ask for anything else. Let's not do the talking [now], let's do it tomorrow on that pitch at 9pm when the game starts. Show our best, best, best, best version and win the game."
