It just wasn't to be for Arsenal as Mikel Arteta's side were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League at the semi-final stage.
The Gunners failed at the final hurdle in Paris and now face an uninspiring end to the 2024/25 season. Fabian Ruiz's strike in the first half on Wednesday night put PSG in a commanding position before Achraf Hakimi doubled the home side's lead on the night with a sublime finish after the interval.
It could have been worse for Arsenal but David Raya saved a poor penalty from Vitinha moments before Hakimi's strike. Bukayo Saka did pull one back for the Gunners but the tie finished 3-1 on aggregate.
Arsenal did start well and could have scored early, with Declan Rice, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard all not taking their chances. Gianluigi Donnarumma made a string of world class saves and proved to be the difference at the Parc de Princes.
It was an encouraging performance from the Gunners overall but the north Londoners just fell short. They had 20 shots in total but just lacked the clinical edge to put the ball in the bet, bar Saka's second half consolation.
As the game approached the final stages, Saka especially became visually frustrated. With 85 minutes on the clock, the England international appeared to be pushed as he challenged for a header, but referee Felix Zwayer did not blow his whistle for a foul.
This left Saka fuming and the right winger was then booked by Zwayer seconds later, with the referee awarding a PSG free kick. Presumably Saka let his feelings be known to the referee and was handed the yellow card for dissent.
TV cameras picked up Thomas Partey holding Saka back as he continued to launch a verbal assault on Zwayer, with the Ghana international even patting Saka on the back at one point.
Arteta was also left raging on a number of occasions throughout the match with decisions made by the officials clearly irritating the Spaniard. The Arsenal boss threw his hands in the air a number of times and even sprinted along the grass in his technical area as he struggled to contain his emotions.
The defeat to PSG means Arsenal's season is effectively over. Premier League fixtures against Liverpool, Newcastle and Southampton remain and the job at hand now is to secure Champions League qualification for next season and try and finish second in the league once more.
A big summer awaits and squad upheaval is on the cards. Arsenal will be back but the 204/25 season is another trophyless campaign for the Gunners.
