Chelsea’s mooted interest in Brendan Rodgers comes as no surprise given Celtic’s dominance in Scotland, according to his former full-back Glen Johnson.

The Northern Irish manager is enjoying a second spell in Scotland and secured Celtic their fourth Scottish Premiership in a row with a 5-0 win over Dundee United.

The former Leicester boss has consistently coped and adapted to losing his best players, including Matt O’Riley’s move to Brighton in the summer, with performances remaining consistently impressive.

However, Celtic have been somewhat hesitant to push the boat out when it comes to backing Rodgers in the transfer market, and the 52-year-old may be eyeing a return to the Premier League.

Brendan Rodgers has won 11 out of 12 available trophies with Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers an option for Chelsea and Tottenham

Pete O’Rourke revealed exclusively to Football Insider that Rodgers was disappointed with Celtic’s transfer business in previous windows, and could quit the club in favour of a move to the Premier League.

The Northern Irishman may be considered as an option for Chelsea, following Enzo Maresca’s falling out with Chelsea fans.

The current Celtic boss has ties to the club, having been the reserves manager between 2006 and 2008, and is no stranger to the league, having managed Swansea, Liverpool, and Leicester.

However, with Ange Postecoglou potentially on his way out of Tottenham, the North London club may look to rival Chelsea for Rodgers’ signature.

Whilst the 52-year-old might not be the first choice for fans at Stamford Bridge, former Chelsea defender Johnson, who played under Rodgers at Anfield, was not surprised to hear his former boss’ name mentioned in regards to the position.

Brendan Rodgers to Chelsea links not ‘surprising’

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, via TG Casino, Johnson gave his thoughts on Rodgers as a coach and the Celtic manager’s ability to make the transition from the Scottish top flight back to the Premier League.

When asked if he was surprised by the links, he said: “I wouldn’t say surprising, obviously it’s a totally different beast to the Scottish league obviously.

“He’s a great coach, works very well with good players, obviously that would be a massive step forward, but he’s obviously doing a great job at the moment.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if that’s something Chelsea are interested in.”
