Dissecting Mikel Arteta's'Arsenal are best team in Europe'comment as Donnarumma gives PSG edge

Mikel Arteta was a proud man on Wednesday night, despite seeing his Arsenal team knocked out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage.

He was also a defiant and angry man. He believed his Arsenal side were the better team over the two legs against Paris Saint-Germain and that it should be the Gunners who are preparing for a final against Inter Milan.

Speaking after the match had ended, Arteta said: "I think we deserve much more. When you analyse both games, who has been the best player, the MVP has been the same player, their goalkeeper. And the Champions League is decided in the boxes, and it's won the game for them because obviously today after 20 minutes and what happened in London as well, the result should have been very different.

"I'm very proud of the team. The team that I've seen today is probably one of the best, if not the best team in Europe. It gives me so much pride but at the same time I'm so upset, so annoyed that we didn't manage to do it."

Let's just analyse that for a moment.

In the first leg, PSG had more possession at the Emirates Stadium, had more passes and enjoyed a higher pass success rate and more shots, albeit with one fewer on target.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made two excellent saves to deny Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, but David Raya made one similarly brilliant stop to deny Desire Doue, while Bradley Barcola wasted a glorious chance and Goncalo Ramos hit the bar.

In the Parc des Prince, roles were reversed. Arsenal enjoyed more possession and had more passes, although the success rate was the same for both teams, with the Gunners having more shots, albeit with PSG now having more on target.

Donnarumma again saved brilliantly from Rice and Odegaard, with Rice missing another glorious chance and Saka somehow blazing over a gilt-edge opportunity, but at the other end Khvicha Kvaratskhelia hit the post, Doue wasted a good opening and Barcola only failed to score thanks to a last-ditch sliding tackle from Rice. That's not to mention the penalty miss, which, however you feel about it, was given and Myles Lewis-Skelly's arm was outstretched from his body.

I actually think Arsenal were the better team in the second leg, although they left themselves exposed to too many good PSG chances. But over the 180 minutes or so of the tie, I cannot agree with Arteta.

PSG did their damage in the first leg and they were the better side at the Emirates Stadium, I don't think anyone can question that.

Yes, Arsenal have injury issues and they would have named a better team lineup if they could, but we're basing it on what we've seen on the pitch and that was two teams who matches each other in most aspects apart from in front of goal. And that's why PSG won and why they deserved to win.
