Summary
Many players would have dreamed of making a move to Barcelona at some point during their careers.
One Manchester United star had the chance to seal a switch to the Nou Camp in their prime.
They instead turned it down in favour of another move that proved to be less successful.
For most players, the opportunity to play for Barcelona would be one that was too good to turn down. The size of the club and its history. The opportunity to play week in, week out at Camp Nou. The chance to win some of the biggest trophies in Spanish and European football. Things that are almost impossible to say no to.
Even if you play for a club like Manchester United, who, when at their peak, were as big as they come, Los Cules remain one of the giants that has such an allure that it could tempt you away from the fortress of Old Trafford. However, for one superstar, the Catalan club was not enough.
While most players that came through the Manchester United academy would have only ever had eyes on making it in the North West, David Beckham was always different. One of the first ever football celebrities, Beckham always had one eye on new experiences and building his brand. That may have played a factor as to why, when Barcelona came knocking, he forced a move to their biggest rivals instead.

Why David Beckham Turned Down Real Madrid
The treble winner had eyes for only one other team
Beckham's acrimonious departure from Manchester United is the stuff of footballing legend. From the Spice Girl to the boot across the eye, the writing was on the wall for some time for the man who was once seen as Sir Alex Ferguson's prodigal son. And when it came time for the midfielder to leave in 2003 for the benefit of both parties, it was Barcelona who approached first.
Despite having the likes of Carles Puyol, Edgar Davids and Patrick Kluivert in their ranks, Beckham was not convinced about joining the same club that legends such as Johan Cruyff had graced before. He was clear, he wanted to become a Galactico instead, as he revealed to CBS Sports:
"Funnily enough, I got sold from Manchester United to Barcelona. I was on holiday and Peter Kenyon [Manchester United board member] called me and he said 'we've accepted a bid from Barcelona and we're selling you.
"I said, if you are going to sell me, the only team I want to move to is Real Madrid. I always had a dream of playing for Real Madrid when I was a young kid. I never thought I would leave Manchester United, but if I did, I'd have loved to have played for Real Madrid. United had to backpedal and funnily enough, in a day and a half, it happened."
Once Madrid came calling, the rest was history. The Englishman joined the likes of Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane, the latter of whom told Beckham to make the move in the first place. He would go on to make 159 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals and managing a further 51 assists.

Who Barcelona Signed Instead of Beckham
A future Ballon d'Or winner was brought in
While many would've seen it as a blow to miss out on a player of the calibre of Beckham, in hindsight, Barcelona fans may look at it as a blessing thanks to who they signed instead. As opposed to the expert crosser, the Catalan giants welcomed a certain Ronaldinho to the club that summer from PSG, who himself was earmarked as Beckham's potential replacement at Old Trafford.

Of course, the Brazilian would go on to become one of the best players in the world and one of Barcelona's greatest, winning the Ballon d'Or while also helping the club win the 2006 Champions League. While Beckham would win just one trophy in his four years in Spain, Ronaldinho collected five during the same period, perhaps indicating that his counterpart made the wrong move.
