Arsenal striker target responds to Gunners links

Arsenal-linked Benjamin Sesko has suggested his future remains open, with little clarity over whether he’s set for a move to north London at this stage.

For large periods of the last 12 months, Arsenal were primarily linked with two strikers – Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko.

Isak was always believed to be the club’s top target, particularly in light of his impressive form with Newcastle United this season. But that form appears to have taken him off the market, with Newcastle refusing to sell.

That appeared to make Sesko the obvious alternative, until more recent reports threw Viktor Gyokeres into the mix in a big way. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is seemingly a fan, and that could be key.

Responding to the Arsenal links and the race for his signature this summer, Sesko suggested nothing has been decided at this stage.

“Right now, I’m 100 per cent focused on RB Leipzig,” Sesko said on Tuesday. “Then we’ll see what happens. It’s open, anything can happen.”

Sesko’s release clause was a little under £50m at one point, but it was a variable clause based on certain appearance, goal, and assist conditions. Sky Sports News have reported more recently that the clause could reach £66m, and is already at least £62m.

The 21-year-old striker has scored 21 goals and assisted six in the Bundesliga this season, but with two games remaining RB Leipzig remain outside of the top four and have also been eliminated from the German Cup.

Should Leipzig fail to break into the top four in their final two games, Sesko’s departure is probably even more likely. With no trophies and no Champions League, the list of reasons to stay would grow thin.
