'Basically done': Arsenal now expect to sign 'world-class' star before end of May - journalist

A deal for Martin Zubimendi to move to Arsenal is “pretty much agreed in principle,” according to Ben Jacobs as per TBR Football.

The 2024/25 campaign has been another “nearly” season for Arsenal. The Gunners are set to finish second in the Premier League for the third consecutive season, having been beaten to the silverware this time by Liverpool rather than Manchester City. Arsenal were also knocked out of both domestic cups before having the chance to play for a trophy.

All of Arsenal’s hopes for silverware were pinned to the Champions League, but the North London side fell short at the penultimate hurdle, losing 3-0 to Paris Saint-Germain across two legs. Despite the work Mikel Arteta has done at the Emirates, he has not won a piece of silverware since the 2019 FA Cup.

The Gunners will no doubt already have an eye on the upcoming transfer window. Arsenal are keen on signing a striker to offer them more depth in attack but will be hoping to reinforce other positions, such as their options in midfield.

Gunners optimistic about potential signing

Martin Zubimendi in action for Real Sociedad

Arsenal have been monitoring Martin Zubimendi for months, the midfielder having, at the time of writing, spent his entire senior career up to this point with Real Sociedad. Zubimendi has developed into one of the best holding midfielders in La Liga, helping his club push for European qualification. Former teammate Kieran Tierney, speaking to The Guardian, once called Zubimendi "world-class," such is his ability.

Zubimendi is expected to depart Sociedad in the summer, just one year after Liverpool held a concrete interest in the Spanish international. According to Ben Jacobs, who spoke on The Done Deal Show, Arsenal are now primed to get a deal over the line for Zubimendi. He said:

“Zubimendi, I’m told it is pretty much agreed in principle. I’d be surprised if May ends and we don’t hear that Zubimendi is an Arsenal player. Internally at Arsenal, they basically think that one is done. The caution around letting that slip is because Liverpool thought it was done as well.

“Until it’s signed, Arsenal are super cautious, but in terms of contract length, terms, payment around the clause and triggering the clause, all of that Arsenal feel is there and ready to go. It’s a case of saying, 'OK, let’s get this signed.' I think we have a very high percentage chance of, in the next few weeks, Zubimendi being confirmed as an Arsenal player.”

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal do in fact get a deal over the line, but Zubimendi would offer the Gunners further quality in depth within their midfield. If players such as Jorginho depart in the summer, then a signing such as Zubimendi makes sense for a team that will push for major honours once again.
