Fresh details emerge as Leeds United consider Chelsea goalkeeper swoop

Leeds United have identified Chelsea’s Djordje Petrovic among their top goalkeeper targets and are seriously considering a move, as per TEAMtalk.

Leeds United are heading for an important summer transfer window and are aware of the task that lies ahead. LUFC need to strengthen in a number of areas if they’re to find success on their return to the Premier League.

For some time, it has been clear that goalkeeper is a problem position for the Whites. That came to a head when number one Illan Meslier was dropped for Karl Darlow in the run-in due to a streak of mishaps.

As such, questions over Meslier’s future have grown louder and louder, and it seems a new goalkeeper is towards the top of this summer’s transfer priorities.

In April, TEAMtalk reported that Leeds United were considering Chelsea loanee Djordje Petrovic as a potential target, and the same outlet has issued fresh details of the Yorkshire giants’ interest.

They state that Petrovic now ranks high on the list of LUFC goalkeeper targets and they are ‘seriously considering’ a move for his services.

It remains to be clear what the 25-year-old’s fate at Chelsea will be though. The Stamford Bridge side are weighing up his future and their own goalkeeping options with several shot-stoppers on the books in West London.

More on Petrovic

Rumoured Leeds United target Petrovic started out in his native Serbia with Cukaricki before moving to America with New England in 2022. A successful year there earned a move to Chelsea in 2023.

Petrovic didn’t start out as the go-to option in goal for Chelsea but injuries and a lack of form for others saw him lock down a place over the second half of the season, keeping seven clean sheets in 31 games for the club overall.

A loan stint with sister club RC Strasbourg has proven a real success, ultimately putting him on the LUFC radar. Under the lead of Liam Rosenior, Petrovic has kept 10 clean sheets in 29 games for a side chasing Champions League football.

A must-solve Leeds United dilemma

It seems as though Meslier’s Leeds United career is as good as done after an error-strewn 2024/25 campaign. The Frenchman lost his place in the Championship and is unlikely to get a shot at redemption in the Premier League.

As for stand-in Darlow, he has proven a solid deputy but Farke and LUFC are unlikely to see him as anything more than that. The former Newcastle United man will likely return to his standing as number two this summer.

It opens the door for a new ‘keeper to come in. The Whites will want someone who can be a success off the bat and Petrovic could be just that, while also being a solid prospect with the potential to boast a high resale value too.
