Sources: Chelsea set to make contact to sign "frightening" £90m star

Chelsea are looking to find out if Morgan Rogers would be interested in completing a switch to Stamford Bridge before making a final decision on whether to lodge a formal bid for the Aston Villa star when the transfer window reopens for business in the summer, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.

Although the Blues will already be provided with fresh creativity in the final third of the pitch thanks to Kendry Paez and Estevao Willian being due to head to west London in the coming weeks, with the latter making the switch for an initial £29million from Palmeiras, head coach Enzo Maresca is seeking further options.

Dario Essugo will also join Chelsea before next season, thanks to a deal worth in excess of £18million being agreed with Portuguese giants Sporting after seeing the midfielder enjoy a productive loan spell with La Liga side Las Palmas, but Rogers is also in the UEFA Conference League finalists' sights as a possible recruit.

Chelsea are set to make contact ahead of potentially submitting a bid to sign Rogers, according to GMS sources, with there being a desire to discover whether he is open to completing a switch to Stamford Bridge before key decision-makers commit to entering negotiations with domestic counterparts Aston Villa.

Admiration of the England international has resulted in his current employers slapping a £90million price tag on him ahead of the summer transfer window, resulting in it becoming clear to the Blues that he will not come cheap, but they are refusing to rule out the possibility of tabling a formal offer.

GMS sources have been informed that Chelsea are showing initial interest in Rogers, who has enjoyed a productive campaign for Aston Villa, but they have stopped short of deciding whether to make a bid in the coming months as they want to gain an understanding of his desire to embark on a fresh challenge.

The creative midfielder has been described as 'frightening' by journalist Dan Bardell, having played a key role in his current employers reaching the Champions League quarter-finals this term, and Maresca is keeping tabs on his situation ahead of potentially handing him an exit route from the Midlands.

Intermediaries are on course to make checks with Aston Villa and Rogers in an attempt to find out how feasible a transfer would be, GMS sources have learned, and Chelsea are keen to wait for an answer instead of rushing into making a proposal as they go in search of becoming even more of an attacking threat.

GMS sources have been told that Chelsea are hopeful that Aston Villa's decision to cash in on Jhon Duran when a big-money offer came their way from Al-Nassr during the winter transfer window means that they will be prepared to consider sanctioning Rogers' departure if a lucrative bid is made.

But the Villans are in a strong negotiating position as the 22-year-old's contract - which allows him to pocket £75,000-per-week - is not due to expire until the summer of 2030, and that is threatening to complicate matters for the Blues as they make preparations for Maresca's second season at the helm.

Chelsea are fans of Rogers' versatility and growth since arriving in the Premier League from Championship outfit Middlesbrough, GMS sources understand, but there is an awareness that Aston Villa's preference is to keep him on board after he has made himself one of the first names on the team sheet under boss Unai Emery.

GMS sources recently revealed that the Blues are not in line to acquire Bart Verbruggen from Brighton & Hove Albion - with Maresca looking to decide between Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic and Mike Penders for the No.1 jersey ahead of next season - but he is seeking attacking reinforcements.
