Arsenal defence squad depth ahead of summer transfer window

All eyes will now be on what Andrea Berta can do in the summer transfer window.

Arsenal's new sporting director will be the most important man at the club for the next few months, now Arsenal have been knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain. With a place in the top five in the Premier League all-but guaranteed - the Gunners need three points from three remaining games to ensure it, focus takes on a transfer angle now.

The Gunners need signings to reinforce their squad as Mikel Arteta looks to make that last push over the line from bridesmaid to bride, having been the closest challengers to the title winners in the last three seasons.

But what work needs to be done across the board, both incoming and outgoing?

We thought we would have a look at the squad situation, area by area, to see what business Arsenal need to do in the summer transfer window. We start with the defence...

Squad depth

The Arsenal official website shows nine defenders currently at the club - with an extra one in the form of youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly. That would suggest at least two players for every position, which is what managers always tend to look for when assessing their squad.

At centre-back, the first choice duo are William Saliba and Gabriel Magalahes, although the latter is injured right now. Then there's cover in the form of Jakub Kiwior, who has stood in well in the Brazilian's absence. Benjamin White and Jurrien Timber can also cover in the centre.

White is normally used at right-back though, while Timber is also normally used as a full-back - normally on the left. Then there's an abundance of full-backs to consider.

Kieran Tierney, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Riccardo Calafiori and Lewis-Skelly all count fulll-back as their position in the main.

Outgoings

The problem with squad depth, particularly going into the summer, comes with not knowing how many will still be at the club come the start of the 2025/26 campaign.

Tierney will be moving on with his contract expiring this summer and there have been links with Kiwior moving away from the club - although this was before he started impressing in Gabriel's absence.

Zinchenko and Tomiyasu have also been linked with moves away from north London and if all four were to depart, that would leave Arteta with six first-team defenders.

Even if they do not all leave, manager Mikel Arteta may look to reinforce his back-line with added strength in depth. Can he rely on Tomiyasu and Zinchenko to do the job required to get them to the Premier League title?

There is also the threat of losing their best players. William Saliba has continuously been linked with Real Madrid and reports have suggested he may need assurances Arsenal are on track to win trophies to remain at the club.

Incomings

If four depart, you would think Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta would look to make two new signings, to ensure they have eight defenders and two for every position.

Arsenal are among the teams lined with making a £50million move for Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen this summer.

Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah will be an interesting one this summer, with his contract expiring. And if Real Madrid really are interested in Saliba, perhaps a move for Raul Asencio would make sense.

His contract at the Santiago Bernabeu runs out in 2026 and they could get a very good deal on him.

Tyrick Mitchell fits the bill as a young defender with Premier League experience under his belt, but Arsenal are blessed in that left-back department already. He is free, however, and should Zinchenko and Tierney leave, signing Mitchell could allow Arteta to move Lewis-Skelly into midfield.
