Mo Salah equals Thierry Henry record

Mohamed Salah has been named Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association for the third time, matching Thierry Henry’s record and cementing his place alongside one of Arsenal’s greatest ever players.

Salah’s award follows a standout season where he has scored 33 goals and provided 23 assists in all competitions. His form helped drive Liverpool to the Premier League title with four games still to play.

He won the vote with 90 percent of support from FWA members. According to the association, it is the biggest winning margin recorded this century. It leaves Salah and Henry as the only three-time winners of the award since it began in 1948.

Salah also won the award in 2018 and 2022.

“It’s a huge honour,” Salah said. “I’m very proud to be recognised again and to be in that company.”

For Arsenal fans, the comparison with Henry is a familiar one. Henry won the award in 2003, 2004 and 2006. He set the standard for what it meant to be a top-level forward in the Premier League. Salah has now matched that standard, at least in terms of recognition.

This comes in a week where Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain and will now face Liverpool at Anfield.

Before the match, Arsenal will give the champions a guard of honour.
