Is Hawks' next franchise QB on the roster? Jeremiah weighs in

Since trading away Geno Smith in March, the Seattle Seahawks have suddenly built one of the more interesting quarterback rooms in the NFL.

Report: Seahawks discussing potential reunion with former Pro Bowl CB

They signed 27-year-old former first-round pick Sam Darnold to a three-year, $105 million deal in free agency. They reunited with 28-year-old backup Drew Lock. And in the NFL Draft, they took a third-round lottery ticket on Alabama dual-threat quarterback Jalen Milroe.

Darnold, who experienced a breakout 2024 campaign with the Minnesota Vikings, is the presumptive starter for 2025. However, his contract is a team-friendly deal that could give Seattle the flexibility to move on after one or two years. That could come into play if Milroe – who’s widely considered to be a multi-year development project – makes enough strides as a passer to complement his tantalizing athleticism as a runner.

With that as the backdrop, Seattle Sports’ Mike Salk posed a point-blank question to NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah during Wednesday’s edition of Brock and Salk.

“Do you think the Seahawks’ next franchise quarterback – and I’m talking about the next guy on this team who will win multiple playoff games and be considered a franchise quarterback, however you choose to define that – do you think they’re currently on this roster?” Salk asked.

Jeremiah paused for a moment before answering.

“I think the fact that there’s a pause there probably is not great in terms of the confidence, but I think they can win playoff games with Sam Darnold,” Jeremiah said. “I do. I think Sam’s good enough to do that. I think they’ve put the right things in place around him. … I mean, I don’t think what he did last year was a fluke. I know the way it ended was not what anybody wanted to see. But I still think the ability is in there for him to do that.”

That being said, Jeremiah isn’t sure whether the Seahawks can win a Super Bowl with Darnold.

“I also have always talked about the confetti test: Do you have a quarterback on your roster that you can imagine the confetti falling on him?” Jeremiah said. “I don’t know that they have that guy.”

Salk then asked whether he envisions Milroe ultimately developing into a franchise QB for Seattle.

“I don’t,” Jeremiah said. “I just think there’s so much distance to travel in the pass game. But I mean, hey, let’s see where it all goes. I know there’s a lot of raw stuff in there, a lot of ability in there. But it’s just, to me, there’s a lot of assembly required.”
