Ask Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle about Caleb Williams, and he rewinds exactly one week. On May 3, the Bears’ second-year quarterback came to Halas Hall on his own. He walked through the Bears’ new playbook by himself, making sure to get the details right.
That’s a good sign.
“I would say that he is very eager to do work,” Doyle said Saturday after the second day of rookie minicamp. “He’s here after hours. He’s really trying to get it right. We’re giving him scripts …
“I think it’s really important to him that he gets it right. I think his teammates can feel that. I think his teammates feel a guy that’s trying to take the next step. It’s been a really positive exposure thus far.”
Doyle knows what it’s like to develop a quarterback. He was on the Broncos staff last year that groomed No. 12 overall pick Bo Nix into the passing yards leader among all rookies. Nix finished with a 93.3 passer rating on a 10-win Broncos team. Williams had an 87.8 on the five-win Bears.
“I think building it around Bo was the biggest thing that we did in Denver, and we’re trying to do the same thing here,” he said. “As we do through OTAs and training camp, we’re going to have a better feel for … This is actually what the offense looks like. We’re going to give them a lot and we’re going to narrow it down from there. We’re in the process of doing that right now.”
