Following the conclusion of their final league gameof the season against Liverpool, Chelsea have made history by becoming the first WSL team to record an invincible season in a 22-game campaign on top of winning their sixth consecutive league title.
The Blues’ final game of the season came against Liverpool, where a 1-0 win saw their invincible title confirmed, with Aggie Beever-Jones scoring the decisive goal that also made her the club’s top scorer in the WSL this season (9).
Invincible seasons have only been achieved three times before by Arsenal (2012), Manchester City (2016) and Chelsea (2017-18), but none of these were in a 22-game WSL season.
Chelsea became the first team in the WSL to complete this feat twice in a season that has seen some memorable moments for both the players and the fans.
Sonia Bompastor has had a brilliant start to life as Chelsea manager, and it could get even better as her side has the opportunity to win thedomestic treble to top off the season.
The Bompastor Era starts with success:
There were questions asked at the beginning of the season regarding whether Chelsea could pick up where they left off with a new manager after spending twelve years under the control of Emma Hayes, in which for many of which they dominated.
Sonia Bompastor’s side has emphatically answered that question, averaging an astounding 2.7 points per game with agoal difference of +43.
Not many managerswould be able to boast an invincible season on their first attempt at a new club in a new country, but Sonia Bompastor is focusing on the future.
Chelseahave the chance to wrap up a domestic treble on Sunday, May 18, when the Blues will travel to Wembley to face Manchester United in the FA Cup final.
“We want to get the treble this season”, were the words of Sonia Bompastor when asked about the upcoming final after the game, making it clear that she was still focused on what comes next despite achievingWSL history.
It is clear that the Chelsea manager has high standards as she stated that “We (Chelsea) still have a lot of room for improvement”.
Memorable WSL Matches this season:
**Crystal Palace (A):**The Blues set their tone for the season in only their secondmatch of the campaign, dismantling the newly-promoted Crystal Palace 7-0 away from home. The game featured sixdifferent scorers, with Guro Reiten being the only player to secure abrace.
**Manchester City (H):**In a match where the opposition dominated the possession, Chelsea proved this was not a problem as they were the much more threatening side, defeating Manchester City 2-0. For all the ballthat City had, the Blues registered triple the shots on target that they did, as well as 7 more shots.
Manchester United (A):The match that won Sonia Bompastor’s side the WSL title saw Lucy Bronze score the decisive goal in a well-contestedmatch.
What’s next for Chelsea?:
As mentionedpreviously, the Blues still have one more match to play before they get a break, but looking ahead to next season, the question will be asked about what they want to achieve after achieving so much already.
Whilst the Blues will want to defend their league title successfully for the sixth consecutive season, there is still one trophy that has eluded them, with that being the Champions League. Chelsea had a good run in the competition this year before being well beaten by a familiar face in the UWCL, Barcelona.
That, alongside retaining the WSL once again, is sure to be their goal, but as Sonia Bompastor stated, their season is not done yet, as there is another major trophy on the line.
