Former Oklahoma star running back thought Pittsburgh Steelers would draft him

PITTSBURGH -- Coming out of Oklahoma and Ohio State in the 2021 NFL Draft, it appeared the Pittsburgh Steelers had a lot of interest in running back Trey Sermon. However, the Steelers took Najee Harris, and the rest is history.

Sermon played his first three seasons at Oklahoma before transferring to Columbus. There, he impressed the Steelers and would have been high on their draft list. Instead, he landed with the San Francisco 49ers.

“I talked to them throughout the whole process quite a bit and met with them at the combine,” Sermon said. “I definitely thought they were going to draft me.”

Sermon has played 42 career games to this point, and jumped around the NFL. He is in Pittsburgh for a rookie minicamp tryout, hoping to land another opportunity in the NFL.

One of the best games of his career game against the Steelers in 2023, when he rushed for 88 yards on 17 carries.

“They brought it up the first day, but just trying to take advantage of the opportunities I was given then,” said Sermon said. “I’m glad to be here.”

Sermon has been around the league, including with the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts. In his career, he has 506 yards rushing.

“Being a couple years in and being a vet, I feel like it’s only right to give a little insight to the younger guys, the younger running backs,” Sermon said. “It’ll only make them better and it’ll only make myself better. We’re competing, but we’re learning from each other. I definitely take it upon myself to be that vet in the room to help those guys out.”

Sermon is hoping to get a contract, and the Steelers have more than a few roster spots to hand out to a few standouts from the rookie minicamp. The veteran hopes he is one of them and that he can make a push for the Steelers’ roster.
