Newcastle United signed me when I was accused of rape - I repaid them with 'bigger club' snub

Several players have starred for both Newcastle United and Chelsea during the Premier League years. The list of men who have ran out for both teams is extensive.

Gavin Peacock didn't play for Newcastle in the top flight, swapping Tyneside for Stamford Bridge due to family reasons not long after United's 1993 promotion. But more than a dozen players have appeared for both, including Demba Ba, Geremi, Celestine Babayaro, Kenedy, Scott Parker, Damien Duff and now Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento.

One striker who was a real hit in the north east before ditching the Magpies for Chelsea was Frenchman Loic Remy. The exciting frontman had a loan spell at St James' Park, flourishing in the French legion that Newcastle had assembled.

Remy joined on a season-long loan from QPR after their relegation. It was second time lucky for United, having been on the verge of signing the striker when he was leaving Marseille, only to be snubbed at the last minute when Remy decided to take the extra money being offered by the London club.

He was unable to keep them in the Premier League, however, and joined United on a temporary deal. It was a huge gamble by manager Alan Pardew and the recruitment team, with Remy having a couple of injury problems - and also a rape charge hanging over him.

The French international had been arrested on suspicion of rape in May 2013 by Scotland Yard's sex crime squad along with two other men. They were questioned over allegations that a woman was raped by three men and released on bail until the September of that year.

Remy denied the allegations but was still under suspicion when Newcastle asked him to join. he was eventually cleared the following February when the police decided to take the case against the three men no further.

Remy admitted he had been glad of the unwavering support from Pardew and Newcastle chiefs, but it didn't stop him rejecting the club a second time. At the end of the season, having scored 14 goals in helping the Magpies to 10th in the Premier League, he told them that he could do better and play for a bigger club.

"That case cooled down a lot of clubs and I was lucky to come to Newcastle, a very great club that I thank," Remy said.

"They supported me a lot in that case. Two days after the final decision coach Alan Pardew told me: 'You have made a very good start to the season, but now I can feel you flying!' The next match I scored. That verdict was such a release from a huge weight.

"In Newcastle, you can feel people in town who make you feel welcome. They are nice. The fans forgive me for having joined QPR in January 2013 while they expected me to sign.

"Talks were at an advanced stage with the Magpies before I decided to join QPR. So last summer when I joined Newcastle I felt indebted to the club. I had to make them forgive me."

He wasn't forgiven for long, however. With the fans voting him Player of the Season and a contract offer on the table, Remy snubbed them again. He temporarily returned to QPR before completing a move before the transfer deadline to Chelsea.

"There are things that have held my career back," he told French media. "Of course it's a shame. Without being pretentious, I could perhaps play at a bigger club, a club in the top five in Europe.

"Yes, I will be part of Europe's top five or I will be part of a very big club. I'm sure of what I can do. I can be a lot better. I still have quite an enormous amount of room for improvement."

Before he left the north east, Remy was in trouble with the police after being stopped on the A696 in March 2014. A test showed he had 56mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The limit is 35mg.

Appearing at Newcastle Magistrates' Court, he admitted being one-and-a-half times over the drink limit and was handed a 14 month ban and fined £3,750.

The subsequent move to Chelsea saw mixed success. Remy's injury problems returned and although he picked up a Premier League winners' medal and one for the League Cup, when he failed to get off the bench in the 2015 final, he departed with just 12 goals in 47 games, having had underwhelming spells on loan at Crystal Palace and Getafe.
