Real Madrid are sizing up a move for Ajax star Jorrel Hato as an alternative to Arsenal's William Saliba. Los Blancos are set to embark on a major summer rebuild after a desperately disappointing campaign.

They are likely to miss out on the La Liga title to Barcelona, lost the Copa del Rey final to their bitter rivals and were dumped out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage as they were smashed 5-1 by Arsenal.

The poor campaign has already led to the impending exit of manager Carlo Ancelotti, with Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso set to arrive in the Italian's place. Alonso will need a number of new signings to make his style of play work.

The main focus will be in defence, with right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold joining on a free transfer from Liverpool. Madrid are also keen to boost their central defensive options, with David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger and Eder Militão all struggling with injury.

Top of their wish list is Saliba, who has played a key role in the transformation of Arsenal into trophy contenders. With just two years remaining on his contract, his situation appears uncertain, though the Gunners are working hard to extend his deal.

If their pursuit of the Frenchman is unsuccessful, Madrid are set to turn their eye to Hato, who himself is a target of Arsenal's. According to Relevo, the Spanish giants have been 'closely monitoring' for months, with a profile that fits their signing policy of recent years.

The 19-year-old is seen as a 'very complete footballer' who could strengthen several positions in Madrid's squad. Some at the Bernabeu see him as a potential replacement for Alaba, with the ability to play at left-back and in central defence.

Alaba's contract is set to expire at the end of next season, with the Austrian having suffered an injury-disrupted season. Hato is said to be among the 'shortlist of candidates' for a summer move.

Ajax star Jorrel Hato is rising up Madrid's transfer shortlist

Hato's representatives are understood to be aware of the interest of Los Blancos. A number of other sides are also interested in him, with Madrid reported to be unwilling to enter a bidding war.

The defender's contract at Ajax still has another three years to run and does not contain a release clause. That means any suitor who pushes ahead with a move will have to negotiate with Ajax, who are in a strong position.

It is reported that 'many clubs' have submitted enquiries about his situation at the Johan Cruyff Arena. Madrid are currently biding their time with a number of other targets also being pursued.

Arsenal are thought to be one of their rivals for the 19-year-old, though would likely be happy to miss out on him if it meant keeping Saliba. For his part, Hato is remaining calm despite the heavy interest in him.

His current focus is on securing the Eredivisie title for Ajax, who sit four points ahead of closest challengers PSV Eindhoven with three games remaining. Hato will then make a decision on his future once that trophy is won.
