Report: 49ers now add “one of the best young English managers” to Rangers job shortlist as…

Rangers and new owners 49ers Enterprises could look for a huge summer shake-up in terms of their managerial role - with the new consortium targeting Steven Gerrard for a romantic Ibrox return.

Gerrard, who has been called one of the 'best young English managers' in football, spent just over three years in the Rangers dugout, taking charge of 193 games and winning 125 of them. But currently unemployed, he could come back to Scotland with Rangers in need of a successful boss under their newfound ownership.

The report by The Telegraph states that Gerrard is on Rangers' longest of managerial candidates as they step up their search for a successor to Philippe Clement.

The Belgian joined Rangers in October 2023, and won the Scottish League Cup in his first few months at the club; though with a loss at the final stage vs Celtic and some extremely poor form in the Scottish Premiership as they sat 13 points behind the Hoops, he was given the boot in February after just over a year in the role.

Barry Ferguson has taken over the interim role for now, winning against their local rivals at Celtic Park - but his league form hasn't been the best, with three wins from eight in the Scottish Premiership, and that will see the club step up their search for a new boss.

Rangers have started the process of finding a new first-team boss, and it's understood that, despite the list of potential appointments heading into double figures, Liverpool legend Gerrard is among them, given his past success at Ibrox, where he won the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020/21 campaign to end a run of nine years without a top-flight title.

Although other English bosses are under consideration and there is no clear favourite, Gerrard's inclusion is intriguing given how successful he was in Govan, before putting the team together that reached the Europa League final, having left for Aston Villa months earlier.

Gerrard has since managed Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq, though his spell was brought to an end in January with the club hovering just five points above the relegation places, opening up a potential move to the UK.
