Massive Steelers defensive tackle still unsure which position he will play

**PITTSBURGH --** Pittsburgh Steelers fifth-round rookie [Yahya Black](https://www.pennlive.com/steelers/2025/05/pittsburgh-steelers-ink-massive-defensive-tackle-to-rookie-contract.html) is still unsure if the team will play him at 4i or nose tackle in the team’s base packages.

The Steelers are still trying to figure out what is the best place for Black on their defensive line, and they will sort out his best position as time goes along, Black said.

“Wherever he wants me to be, I’ll be there,” Black said.

Defensive line coach Karl Dunbar said after the draft Black could play anywhere, but played a lot more at defensive end at Iowa, which could be his starting spot to ease him into the NFL.

Black is a massive play at 6-foot-5, 336 pounds with 35.5-inch arms. For now, he is just trying to find his bearings in the NFL.

“I’m really just trying to soak in everything,” Black said. “There’s a lot of things out there that they’re trying to teach us, and sometimes you just have to take it one thing at a time to really try to take everything in.”

Black noted the Steelers have already pointed out his pad level as a significant area of focus.

“It’s always gonna be a main focus,” Black said. “I’m clearly a big guy.”

Black plays like a nose tackle type the team saw down at the Senior Bowl. A strong player, he can play anywhere from 0-technique to 4i and is a perfect fit for the Steelers’ defense.

He will join Logan Lee on the defense and is now the fourth Hawkeye to join the Steelers after the team picked running back Kaleb Johnson in the third round and signed defensive back Sebastian Castro.
