Ben Johnson had been eyeing the Chicago Bears job for some time. Part of it was because he fell in love with the city during family trips there during the summer. Another was the opportunity to work with Caleb Williams. The new head coach, like many others, had become aware of the eventual #1 overall pick from watching him in college. After Johnson had so much success in Detroit working with Jared Goff, who is less talented than Williams, one can understand the eagerness to establish that relationship.
However, it is well-known that a large gulf separates a player’s physical gifts and desire to be great. Everybody knew Williams was a rare physical specimen with his mobility and arm talent. What they weren’t sure about was his work ethic. There were rumblings that he developed some bad habits as a rookie, trying to cut corners in the process. From the sound of things, that has changed. New offensive coordinator [Declan Doyle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuv7KNVLzXk&t=1s&ab_channel=ChicagoBears) revealed that Williams has been putting in tons of extra time to prepare for this upcoming season.
He’s not naive. The Bears have done everything possible to empower him this year. They hired one of the best offensive minds in the league to become their new head coach. They spent vast sums of money to upgrade his protection and then used their first two draft picks on new weapons at tight end and wide receiver. No young quarterback in Bears history has ever been this heavily armed so early in his career. If he can’t start winning football games and producing at a high level this year, questions about his viability as a franchise quarterback will begin. The fact that Caleb Williams is spending extra time preparing signals that he isn’t naive. He understands that the level of expectations has just been raised dramatically. The grace period is over. It is time to go win.
