What William Saliba did vs Liverpool as Luis Diaz embarrasses Arsenal man

Arsenal looked very much like a team who suffered heartbreak in the Champions League in midweek and had little to play for in the Premier League when they took on Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

The Gunners players gave the Reds a guard of honour for winning the title, something that may not have been easy to do having been the closest challengers to Liverpool in the race for the crown this season.

It has been another season of 'what if' for Arsenal as they ran out of steam in the Premier League title race and were then beaten by a better side in PSG in the Champions League semi-final.

Against Liverpool, the Gunners were given the runaround in the first half and when the home side went in front through Cody Gakpo, thanks to some lax defending by the visitors, it was all Liverpool until half-time.

Gakpo headed home an Andy Robertson cross moment after failing to capitalise when played clean through. But the nature of the goal - the Dutchman was completely unmarked - will have been worrying for Mikel Arteta.

The Arsenal defence went to sleep as Liverpool played a quick throw-in. William Saliba did not pick up Gakpo, leaving him the simplest of tasks to head in.

Saliba was not done there with the mistakes.

As Mohamed Salah played a delicious ball through for Dominik Szoboszlai, the Hungarian then played a square ball across the box, away from the outrushing David Raya. And Luis Diaz was the one to get on the end of it to slide it into an empty net for 2-0.

Saliba was on his heels, however. Diaz ran from at least a couple of yards behind Saliba, with the Frenchman again on his heels not really aware of his surroundings, to allow the Colombian the freedom of Anfield to run past him and score.

In the grand scheme of things it will not matter what happens come full-time, but neither Saliba, nor his manager, will be too happy with his performance.
