The Chicago Bears knew how the top of the 1st round would likely unfold. They placed the required phone calls to see what the costs were for moving up. They obviously had interest in pass rusher Abdul Carter and running back Ashton Jeanty. However, once it became clear the price tag was too high, they had to project their likeliest options at 10th overall. Head coach Ben Johnson indicated to GM Ryan Poles that he really liked Michigan tight end Colston Loveland over the other possibilities. After getting the green light from his scouts and front office, Poles acquiesced that it was a good decision.
Since then, all signs have indicated the Bears may have been playing chess while draft experts were stuck on Go Fish. Multiple insiders reported that several teams picking later in the first round were desperately looking for avenues to trade up, hoping Loveland would fall far enough to get him. Once Chicago scooped him up, all trade chatter ceased until the mid-20s. People still haven’t fully grasped how talented Loveland actually is.

Keep in mind, Sam LaPorta has established himself as one of the five best tight ends in the sport. He’s been that good over the past two years. So, to say Colston Loveland is superior in almost every facet of the game is beyond noteworthy. Now you’re handing him to the same guy who helped turn LaPorta into a star. This is one of those situations where the NFL will probably regret such a union happening two or three years from now. Loveland still has some recovery to do from a shoulder injury suffered last season. However, he’s reportedly picking up the offense fast. Coaches are excited about what he brings to the table. If things unfold as expected, this pick could finally transform the Bears offense.
