No team took a bigger jump to championship contention last season than the Washington Commanders. After a four-win season in 2023, the organization rebuilt the roster from the top down and improved its win total by nine games in 2024.
As the organization prepares for an encore of that historical turnaround, merely being a playoff contender won't cut it anymore for the Commanders. They have a phenom at quarterback, and a coaching staff that is returning almost all of their personnel for the 2025 season.
Playoff contention is nice. Championship contention has to be the goal, though.
With the Philadelphia Eagles winning the Super Bowl last season, the Commanders know they are in a division with the league's best roster. If they can close the gap there, they can firmly supplant the Eagles as the league's best roster moving forward.
And that's the argument that CBS Sports is making.
“With the Commanders in full win-now mode, adding Laremy Tunsil and Deebo Samuel as Daniels’ support, no one would be shocked if they push the rival Eagles as NFC heavyweights," CBS Sports writer Cody Benjamin wrote.
Washington has done plenty this offseason to be considered true Super Bowl title contenders. They just have to go out now and prove it on the field.
And while sustaining success in the league is never easy, the Commanders believe they have the roster to do it. And supplant themselves as true title contenders moving forward.
