UAB Drops Finale at Charlotte, 49ers Complete Sweep

CHARLOTTE - UAB Baseball (23-28, 7-17) let a late lead slip away as the Blazers fell to Charlotte (31-20, 15-9) on Sunday afternoon 10-7 as the 49ers completed the sweep of the Green and Gold. Despite the loss, UAB outhit Charlotte 14-8.

For the second straight game, the Blazers got out front early. In the top of the 1st, Nick Hollifield reached on an infield single to put UAB up 1-0. With two outs, the Green and Gold executed a steal-and-stop to perfection as Hollifield was caught up in a rundown which allowed Camden Hayslip to score before Hollifield was tagged out to end the half inning. That put the Blazers up 2-0.

Charlotte got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a Logan Poteet solo home run to right field.

Poteet would tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd on an RBI single to left to score Spencer Nolan.

The Blazers answered back in the top of the 4th. Todd Clay ripped a solo home run to straight-away center to put UAB back in front 3-2.

The 49ers got a solo home run of their own in the bottom half of the 4th from Carson Bayne to tie the game back up.

Wesley Helms' second hit of the day came in the top of the 5th when he singled home Gavin Lewis Jr. to put UAB ahead again. The next batter was Todd Clay who also singled and brought home Logan Braunschweig to extend the Blazer lead to 5-3.

Charlotte inched closer in the bottom of the 5th. Poteet grounded into fielder's choice but an errant throw which scored Juan Rivera to cut the deficit to 5-4.

The 49ers would tie the game in the bottom of the 7th as Dawson Bryce grounded out on an 0-2 count to score Rivera. Later, Noah Furcht drew a bases loaded walk to put the 49ers ahead 6-5.

In the bottom of the 8th, Connor Maryniak launched his 2nd home run of the weekend, this time a 3-run home run to right to put Charlotte up 9-5. Two pitches later, Bryce hit a solo home run to get the Charlotte lead to 10-5.

The Blazers would mount a rally in their half of the 9th. Wesley Helms capped his 3-hit day with a 2 RBI single to right to score Lewis and Braunschweig to cut the Charlotte lead to 10-7 but it wasn't enough as the 49ers hung on to win by that margin and complete the 3-game series sweep.
