Former Southampton manager Russell Martin believes that the incident involving Tyrone Mings in Aston Villa's narrow win over Bournemouth on Saturday was a 'worse' coming together than that which saw Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson sent off at Newcastle United.
Chelsea striker Jackson was red carded for a clash involving Magpies defender Sven Botman, after referee John Brooks was advised by VAR to check replays via the monitor. Newcastle were leading 1-0 at the time and went on to emerge 2-0 victors in a game involving two sides who, like Villa, harbour Champions League ambitions.
The day before, Villa centre half Mings - who was back on his old stomping ground, having joined Villa from the Cherries in 2019 - caught Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott with his elbow, although referee Stuart Attwell deemed it to be unintentional and Mings wasn't punished. Scott was forced off at half time, in a game Villa edged 1-0.
Discussing the two respective incidents, pundit Danny Murphy was left wondering if Jackson's marching orders came as a result of the Mings incident being so fresh in the minds of the officials' body, having not been acted upon.
"Saturday, with Tyrone Mings and not getting punished, I don't know if the PGMOL talk before games but you can imagine it's in the back of their head," Murphy told Match Of The Day 2.
Martin, who guided the Saints to promotion last year but who lost his job midway through the season with the club heading for relegation, added: "I think the Tyrone Mings one, in my opinion, is worse than that one."
In the aftermath of the game on Saturday night, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp took a different view.
"I don't personally think it is," he said, when reviewing the collision. "There is obviously a massive difference in height. Tyrone is about six foot four. I don't necessarily think he swings his elbow, he just puts it out - you use your arms to create leverage or space. I don't think it's a red card, I don't think it's malicious. It's an accident that happens on the pitch."
