Gabriel Martinelli makes Arsenal vow as clear trophy claim made after Liverpool

Gabriel Martinelli hopes Arsenal can "improve and win trophies" next season after helping the Gunners come from behind to draw at Liverpool.

After first half goals from Cody Gakpo and Luiz Diaz, Martinelli's header two minutes after half-time inspired a Gunners fightback. Mikel Merino levelled the scores with 70 minutes on the clock and both sides had chances to win the game in the dying stages, despite Merino being shown a second yellow card for a foul on Darwin Nunez.

Martinelli, who moved into the No.9 role in the second half, has now scored six goals against Liverpool throughout his career, with four of those coming at Anfield. "It's really good to play against them," the Brazilian told Arsenal's official website.

"It's really hard as well. I always try to do my best, not just against them, against every team, but against them, I think I've got a bit more lucky, and it's an open game as well. It's a game I like to play, going in behind and threatening their last line. I think it was a great game today. But as I said, we could have done better in the first half, but the boys did a great effort out there.

"Of course, we wanted to win the game. We came here with the mentality to win it. At half-time, we talked and we knew that we could do better, and this is what we did. You could see in the beginning of the second half, we scored and then we went for it. It was hard in the end with one [player] less, but we tried our best and we gave everything out there."

Martinelli also extended his incredible record of never losing a game in which he has scored. It’s now a run which stretches 45 matches and the amazing statistic sparked a joke from the winger post-match.

"I'll try to score every single game from now on!" he smiled after the game. "I mean, it's really good to have these stats. I just try to do my best for the team."

The 23-year-old now hopes the performance against the Premier League champions can inspire the Gunners to come back stronger next season. "We saw what we can do. What we did against them in the second half was amazing," he said.

"The effort and everything we did was great. As I said, we wanted to win the game, but in the end, it was not that bad. We just take the positive things and go for the next season to try to improve and win trophies."
