In the 2025 Draft, the San Francisco 49ers were able to sit at pick No. 11 and address a major need, drafting edge defender Mykel Williams. The 49ers made Williams the second edge defender in a deep defensive line class that included five edge defenders going in the first round, so that speaks to how good he is. Abdul Carter, the third-overall pick, was the only edge scouts believed was better than Williams.
However, not everyone is convinced Carter will have a better rookie season than the 49ers’ first rounder. In a recent ESPN piece, several analysts were asked to predict Rookie of the Year winners. On the defensive side of the ball, Carter received the majority of votes (5), but four of the experts believe Williams will actually walk away with the award.
Mykel Williams emerges as a popular DROY pick among NFL analysts
The common sentiment from those who selected Williams is that he landed in the perfect situation in San Francisco. Being coached by Robert Saleh and playing across from Nick Bosa in a defense that is dominant on a yearly basis sets up a player like Mykel Williams for immediate success.
"What a dream setup. He's big, explosive and can line up anywhere. The real cheat code? He's playing next to Bosa, which means he's going to see a ton of one-on-ones. Throw in Williams' raw power and high motor ... he has a real shot to make noise fast."

Beyond the environment Williams was drafted into, the analysts raved about his personal skillset that will allow him to get the most out if this ideal set up. Ben Solak praised his “tackle radius, explosiveness and grip strength,” arguing that he should get a lot of sacks in the NFL. Stephanie Bell talked about Williams’ ability as a run defender, and how him setting the edge opposite of Bosa should be a lot of fun.
If Williams can deliver like everyone thinks he can, he won’t just have the chance to win Defensive Rookie of the Year, he could help the 49ers get back to contender status. That’s what San Francisco is hoping for.
